Wonderful Wool: Celebrating Wool Month
As the leaves turn and fall, and crisp autumn mornings signal shorter days, I can’t help but reach for my favourite knitwear. There's something special about the cosy feeling wool provides when the chill sets in - it’s one of the reasons I love autumn so much.
Growing up in Wales, I’ve always been surrounded by sheep, so wool has been a natural part of my life. Wool is a truly remarkable fibre, and October is the perfect time to celebrate it. It’s durable, versatile, and eco-friendly, used not only for clothing but also for blankets, carpets, and insulation. Wool is insulating, water-resistant, and biodegradable, making it a great choice for both style and sustainability.
Wool is naturally self-cleaning due to its antimicrobial properties, meaning it doesn't need to be washed as frequently as other fabrics. Wool fibres are naturally resistant to absorbing odours and dirt, so airing out a wool jumper after wearing is often enough to freshen it up.
For heavier wool items like coats, spot cleaning stains and airing them out regularly will suffice, and a proper clean can be done professionally once or twice a season, depending on wear. Air drying and storing wool properly, away from heat and sunlight, ensures your favourite pieces last season after season. Regular care ensures your wool garments stay fresh and last longer!
At Our Fashion Fix we champion natural fibres like wool, which are renewable and support local communities. Wool is naturally regenerated by sheep, making it a fantastic, eco-conscious choice. It’s also naturally water-resistant, odour-reducing, and biodegradable, so it's as kind to the planet as it is to our skin.
Even King Charles III, the patron of the Campaign for Wool, advocates for wool’s role in reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
This October, as we embrace the beauty of autumn, let’s celebrate wool—a fibre that not only keeps us cosy but helps protect our planet.
