Turning Preloved Fashion into Profit: The Rise of Resale Platforms

Fashion’s latest trend isn’t just stylish—it’s sustainable and surprisingly profitable. Resale platforms like Vinted, once little-known, are now at the forefront, turning losses into significant profits and proving that eco-conscious fashion is commercially viable.

Vinted’s transformation from a €20.4 million loss in 2022 to a €17.8 million profit illustrates the growing enthusiasm for sustainable practices. The platform, alongside others like Depop and eBay, offers a user-friendly experience with perks like no seller fees and automated shipping labels, making it easier for everyone—from teenagers to adults—to engage in the circular fashion economy.

This shift is particularly pronounced among kids and teenagers, who are leveraging these platforms to refresh their wardrobes affordably while contributing positively to the environment. The Natwest pocket money index noted a 67% increase in the use of resale platforms since 2020, signalling a robust move towards sustainable shopping.

The rise of resale is reshaping consumer habits; what starts as selling soon turns into buying. With the preloved market projected to grow 16 times faster than traditional retail by 2026, it’s clear that this trend is more than just a passing phase—it’s a pivotal movement towards a more sustainable future in fashion.

Are there other platforms you’ve used or heard about that are making a difference in sustainable fashion?   Share your stories and let’s celebrate the small victories along our journey to a more sustainable future.
